Make your own phenakistoscope and embrace your inner Victorian physicist or just your inner crafty child.

Use the downloadable template or draw around the phenakistoscope in my zine onto a piece of card, then cut out your phenakistoscope.

Draw your design around the phenakistoscope. If you put an image between each notch, you'll need 12 frames for your animation. You might want to draw your starting frame and your midpoint frame in first as a guide, and don't forget to make sure your sequence loops.

When you've completed your design, poke a pencil through the small circle at the centre. Or if you have a split pin, you can put that through the centre and attach it to a long thin piece of card so your phenakistoscope looks like a big lollipop.

To view your animation, you'll need a mirror. Stand facing the mirror, and hold up your phenakistoscope so that you're looking at its reflection in the mirror. Then spin, looking at the moving images through the little notches.
